AMP’s Solar Rebate Program a Success

Alameda Municipal Power (AMP) announced today that it has become one of the first publicly owned utilities in the state to reserve all of its commercial solar rebate funding, proving that Alameda’s businesses are committed to sustainable power.  The entire $2.8 million in rebates available for commercial projects was reserved in just under five years—five years ahead of schedule.

In 2008, the State of California mandated that all electric utilities provide rebates over the next ten years to residential and commercial customers who install an approved solar energy system.  In compliance with SB 1, AMP allocated $4.2 million for rebates, with approximately two-thirds of the total allotted for commercial projects and the remaining one-third for residential projects (based on the proportion of revenue that AMP receives from each).

“Alamedans can be proud that Alameda Municipal Power is a leader in promoting renewable power sources,” said Janet Oppio, Assistant General Manager for Energy Resources at AMP.  “Over 167 residents and business owners have received AMP solar rebates, making Alameda one of the greenest places to live and work in the Bay Area.”

Although commercial solar rebate applications are no longer being accepted, AMP has other options available for commercial customers who would like to invest in renewable power, including a new Voluntary Renewable Power program.  For a modest monthly premium, the program will purchase Green-e certified renewable energy credits (RECs) on behalf of commercial customers in designated “block” quantities.  Green-e certified renewable energy credits can also be purchased on behalf of residential customers who want to increase their renewable energy supply to 100% of usage.  AMP’s Voluntary Renewable Power program will begin this summer.

AMP’s residential solar rebate program is still accepting applications, but the rebates are going fast.  Alameda homeowners who are thinking about installing solar are encouraged to do so soon if they want to take advantage of these rebates as funding is limited.  Applications are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis.
