AMP Urges Customers To Be Aware of Utility Bill Scams

Alameda Municipal Power (AMP) is alerting customers to be aware of a scam that has impacted other utility customers in several states. The scam claims that President Barack Obama is providing credits or applying payments to customers’ utility bills. According to reports, scammers are handing out flyers, using social media and sending text messages. They have asked for personal information, including Social Security numbers and credit card information, saying the information is needed to apply payments to customers’ utility bills.

AMP wants to assure customers that AMP employees carry proper identification when called out to any job. Additionally, the utility does not randomly call or text message customers asking for Social Security numbers or other information. While AMP has not received any reports of customers being contacted by scammers, customers are urged to call AMP (748-3900) to report anything suspicious.

Here are some tips to help customers stay safe:

  • AMP employees always carry photo identification cards. If the ID is not visible and you don’t see any other AMP logo, ask the individual to show you their badge.
  • All AMP vehicles are marked with the AMP name and logo. If you are approached by someone claiming to be from AMP, check to see if their vehicle is clearly marked and/or ask for ID.
  • Verification is easy. If you have any doubts or concerns that a visitor or caller represents AMP, call AMP at 748-3900to check on the individual and their task.
  • If you get a call demanding immediate payment on your account, be suspicious. AMP only provides courtesy calls to accounts that are already delinquent. If you have any doubts, don’t give out any information. Please hang up and call AMP Customer Service Representatives at 748-3900.
  • Never provide unsolicited callers or visitors with credit card numbers or any other information that may compromise your financial security.
