Get Plugged In at Civic Center Garage

The City of Alameda and the Alameda Chamber of Commerce hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony  for the new publicly accessible Electric Vehicle (EV) Charging Stations on the first level of the Civic Center Garage, 1420 Oak Street. These charging stations were made possible through a grant awarded to Alameda Municipal Power (AMP) by the Department of Energy, as part of the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act (ARRA).

The new EV charging stations are level 1 and 2 charging stations. A level 1 charging station uses a standard 120-volt outlet and a level 2 charging station uses a 240-volt outlet.

“AMP is piloting the new technology and will provide the EV charging free of cost during the pilot,” said Girish Balanchandran, AMP’s General Manager.  Anyone can plug into the charging stations 24 hours a day, seven days a week. However, there is a cost of 50 cents per hour to park in the Civic Center garage, Monday through Saturday, 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.

Although most vehicle charging will occur at home, access to public charging infrastructure will increase the number of miles traveled on electricity. Moreover, by reducing the amount of CO2 emitted by automobiles, the City of Alameda continues to make progress towards the goals of the Local Action Plan for Climate Protection (LAPCP).
