Alameda Municipal Power Achieves Safety Milestone
Today Alameda Municipal Power (AMP) will mark 1,825 days—five years—without a loss-time accident. This achievement demonstrates the utility’s commitment to protecting workers’ safety, while also ensuring reliable electric service to customers. “AMP takes safety very seriously,” said Doug Draeger, Assistant General Manager for Engineering & Operations. “Most of our staff faces elements of danger every day working with electricity. It is important that safety is the first consideration at the start of each day, to guarantee that we all go home healthy.” A lost-time incident occurs when an employee is involved in a work-related safety incident that prevents him or her from being able to work the next work day. Because lost-time incidents are typically very serious in nature, AMP tracks this information to measure its safety performance. AMP also utilizes several other metrics to measure its safety performance: Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) recordable incidents; vehicle incidents; mandated safety training completed; and an employee opinion survey. All metrics support the strong safety culture that is demonstrated daily at AMP. A safe work environment ensures continued productivity by minimizing lost work days and work restrictions due to injuries. It also ensures that AMP’s employees who are doing dangerous electrical work in the community are always on the lookout for their own safety as well as the public's safety. “Keeping staff and customers safe is AMP’s top priority,” said Madeline Deaton, Public Utilities Board president. “I’m very proud of our employees who have built a workplace culture that truly embraces safety.”
