AMP Warns Customers of Phony Bill Scam

Alameda Municipal Power (AMP) is warning customers today of a scam targeting small businesses in Alameda.

AMP has received multiple complaints from local businesses this week that someone impersonating a utility representative (either on the phone or in person) is claiming their electric accounts are past due and will be disconnected. The individual goes on to provide payment instructions via Green Dot MoneyPaks or NetSpend prepaid debit cards.

If you receive a call demanding immediate payment on your account, be suspicious. AMP will never ask for credit or debit card numbers and only provides automated courtesy calls to accounts that are already delinquent. If you have any doubts, don’t give out any information. Please hang up and call AMP customer service representatives at 748-3900. AMP also maintains an automated system that enables you to check your balance 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

If you suspect you have become a victim of this scam, AMP recommends that you immediately call the Alameda Police Department to file a report. Alameda Police can be reached at 337-8340. AMP is working with the Alameda Police Department to alert local businesses including those businesses that sell pre-paid cards.

Here are some tips to help you stay safe:

  • AMP employees always carry photo identification cards. If the ID is not visible and you don’t see any other AMP logo, ask the individual to show you their badge.

  • All AMP vehicles are marked with the AMP name and logo. If you are approached by someone claiming to be from AMP, check to see if their vehicle is clearly marked and/or ask for ID.

  • Verification is easy. If you have any doubts or concerns that a visitor or caller represents AMP, call AMP at 748-3900 to check on the individual and their task.

  • Never provide unsolicited callers or visitors with credit card numbers or any other information that may compromise your financial security.
