New Board to Begin Planning for Undergrounding Power Lines

ALAMEDA, Calif. – The city of Alameda’s “undergrounding” program, in which overhead power lines and equipment are moved underground, is the focus of a new District Nomination Board. Composed of four members of the public and one member from the Public Works Department, the Board will hold its kick-off meeting on June 30.

The board will hear an overview of the Underground Utility District program at the meeting, which will be held at 6 p.m. at 2000 Grand Street.  In the coming months, the board will recommend districts in the city for undergrounding power lines and equipment. The board’s recommendation will go to a Technical Advisory Committee for evaluation. The committee will then make recommendations on districts to the City Council, for its determination.

AMP, which administers the city’s undergrounding program, plans to start construction in the districts in fiscal year 2018, after the public process is complete and districts have been chosen. A survey and town hall meeting will be planned to provide the public with opportunities to comment on the recommended districts. About 50 percent of Alameda is currently served by underground power lines.
