Alameda Municipal Power Invited to Participate in Fleet Week

ALAMEDA, Calif. — Alameda Municipal Power (AMP) will educate the public on its potential roles in emergencies in an exercise led by the U.S. Maritime Administration (MARAD) as part of San Francisco Fleet Week. AMP will participate in MARAD’s open house and emergency response demo at Pier 50 in San Francisco from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, October 8.

MARAD’s ship, MV Cape Hudson, will be docked at the pier and open to the public. An AMP crew will board the ship with a bucket truck and a digger derrick truck, both of which AMP would likely use in a large-scale emergency. Earthquake response will be highlighted during this year’s Fleet Week.

“AMP is honored to be invited by MARAD to demonstrate our role in emergency response and support the critical emergency response mission of MARAD at San Francisco Fleet Week,” AMP’s Interim General Manager Liz Warmerdam said. “The event occurs during the last day of Public Power Week, and we are excited to recognize how community-owned electric utilities respond to emergencies."

The exercise will showcase how multiple government agencies coordinate to respond to emergencies and assist the public. MARAD, which has a fleet of ships berthed at Alameda Point, is one of AMP’s largest commercial customers.
